Epic Rides Festival Santa Cruz!
Trout Gulch Adventure Ride
Our first day will be open to the public and will have less miles but they are high quality! Our first ride starts at 9am and will be 26 miles with 1.600ft of climbing. We will do a warm up in Valencia valley enjoying the apple trees, vineyards, and redwood forest. We will take a detour on Freedom Blvd to the Climb of Huntington Rd. After this steep little gem we will loop back to Trout Gulch and take in our first big climb of the tour! The road is very gradual and has beautiful forests and open meadows for three miles. The last mile is the real climb and averages almost %10 grade. At the top there is a half mile gravel plateau that is very rideable on a road bike. You may not want your lightest tires or wheels for this one;) The gravel is fun and over quickly, we make a lasso loop back and enjoy the fast pavement back on Trout Gluch and finish along the coast.
After our ride we will have either whole fruit and or smoothie at 11am. At 12pm we will enjoy a 50 min yoga class for the legs and then have a lunch potluck at my complexes back lawn amongst beautiful pine trees. The rest of the afternoon is free time, hit the beach or maybe grab a beverage with some of your tour members…
The Mount Madonna Pilgrimage
Friday we will meet in the quaint south county town of Corralitos. A pre ride stretch begins at 9:45am and then we will head out to tackle the warm up climb of Hazel Del before the epic Mt Madonna. Hazel Del is gradual but gets stronger at the top and has beautiful sights all the way. A fun down hill leads us to a brief loop through south county farm land and then back up Mt Madonna. This road is a 4.5 mile climb with a %7 average but really its a mile false flat and a %10 three mile climb with stunning views of the Monterey Bay Area. The last half mile is still work but eases enough to give your legs relief. A golden meadow and water fountain awaits at the top!
We will descend the famous hwy 152 witch is a main road but has wonderful banked turns and should be less busy at this time on a Friday. Back over the Del to return home and it will be a good day of hills. Riders hungry for lots of Climbing can descend to the back side of Mount Madonna from the Gilroy side and tackle the final mile and a half of gravel to the top.
Normal route will be 40 Miles with 4,000ft Double Mt Madonna will be 55 with over 5,000ft of climbing!
After the ride we will have a taco Feist catered by the local Los Paricos taqueria(Its excellent!) and a pool party at my Moms House in Corralitos! Music, dance, lounging, and stretching are welcome. There will be no official yoga class this day but you can ask me questions and I can show you stretches at the party.
Ice Cream Grade Mountains to the Sea Ride!
Starting from my house in Capitola at 10am we will take on the gorgeous small climb of Mt View to descend into the Branciforte valley. A rolling down hill through the valley is lovely and low trafficked. We will ride on some busy roads through the downtown Santa Cruz Area and then take a trip up the hill to the forested University. After a tour of UCSC we will continue to climb on Empire Grade, a steep ramp for a mile takes us to smith grade for more up hill. Some small decents recharge our legs for the beautiful switch backs of Ice cream grade. Enjoy the mixed terrain of redwoods and Doug fir/pine sections and make the steep decent to the ocean! For the rest of the ride we will traverse the famous west cliff and east cliff back to Capitola. The hills tend to be hot so to cool off with easier roads along the coast will be a perfect reward. Also we will have Ice Cream and Pizza(Both with vegan options) at my house with games and fun on the lawn to digest and be ready for an afternoon yoga class… mostly gentle stretches as by then we will be worked.
This course will be 50 miles with 4.000ft of climbing!
Larkin Valley Lasso Loop
Starting at 11am from Capitola we will ride along the south county ocean and take on some different hills in Aptos and Watsonville. The scenic climb of Vista Del Mar is one of my favorites and has a eruopean neighborhood like feel:) From there we take the Larkin Valley/White Rd/Calabasas loop. The hills are short and pack a punch but have great vistas. Horses and Apple orchards highlight this south county classic route. The climb on the back side of Larkin valley is longer, gradual and very beautiful. We will finish with ocean views and light refreshments at my house.
This ride will be 30 miles with a little over 2,000ft of climbing.
Yoga will be two hours after we finish. Live music going wine tasting or out to dinner will be an option as a bonus activity. Keep having a blast with the group or chill and recharge on your own. There are many places to get massage or have a private hot tube sauna in Santa Cruz!
